I find it interesting the City of Grosse Pointe, in the past, has pointed to a 1971 State Supreme court decision which ties their hands in the case of hospital expansion and development, yet, NOW are saying they want to create a hospital zone. If this is the case, why has all the development that's occurred in the last 20 years been permitted? The hospital has already purchased and and replaced with parking lots all the residences on the City side of Cadieux.

I would not rely on the GP City council to do much to limit hospital expansion, their past record speaks for itself.

Thanks for your comment Tim,

Judith and I are facing the present danger of Notre Dame demolition for Beaumont

Parking lot expansion. This plan calls for two phases. The first wipes out the street side facing us , replacing those homes with a blank wall similar to the one facing you. The second wipes out our side-including our retirement home. This plan requires re-zoning. The GP City Council meets 4/23 to consider this Beaumont request.

You are absolutely right to suspect the GP appearance of objectivity in this matter.

Judith and I were at the same council meetings as you, back in the day, when

it caved to the far less formidable Bon Secours. "Didn't you know this was a done deal" said one council member--mocking your and our efforts to stop the madness.

This newish "non-profit" for profit hospital will ruin Judith and I, decrease the property tax base for GP, and continue the aesthetic decline of the neighborhood.

We attended the Beamont "information" meeting, which was simply a presentation of their plans and no acknowlegement of the affected neighborhood residents.

The presenter for Beaumont, a Mr. Swain, presented a paradigm, without realizing it,of "being in the bubble".

Swain left no fallacy of relevance or ambiguity unused in his paen to Beaumont plans

One out of every two Detroit adults is neither holding a job nor looking for work, the worst percentage among 41 major U.S. cities. 174,000 Detroiters age 16-64 don't work. The Detroit city council voted this week to double the city's income tax rate on corporations from 1% to 2%, not a way to provide badly needed jobs.

Mayor Bing was released from Henry Ford Hospital Saturday where he was being treated for a pulmonary embolism following intestinal surgery.

Michigan, Ohio and the EPA are cooperating in an effort to deal with growing toxic algae blooms which are destroying the western end Lake Erie for recreation and fishing. The blooms are caused by fertilizer runoff from farms and Detroit sewage treatment overflows.

Detroit's Belle Isle is not likely to remain a free park once responsibility for it is assumed by the state Department of National Resources as planned in the Detroit's consent agreement signed this week. Visitors will likely be required to a $10 license plate fee which provides access to Michigan's 99 state parks.

Michael Rosenberg calls Niklas Lidstrom "nothing short of genius" in a long story recapping of the Detroit Redwings capain's life and hockey career, rating him one of the top 10 players in the history of the game. The Time has Come for Stricter Handgun Control Laws

Bravo for State Rep. Tim Bledsoe's plea for repeal of Michigan's "stand your ground" law. Michigan's statute is a virtual copy of the Florida law which has resulted in a big increase in shootings and deaths since it was adopted in 2005. The "castle doctrine" which originated in English common law has served us well for hundreds of years. Beyond repealing Michigan's "stand your ground" law, Michigan and it's cities should adopt the strictest laws governing the sale and use of handguns permissible under the current U.S. Supreme Court interpretation of the Second Amendment. Steps should be taken to provide for the effective enforcement of these laws. Adopting laws advocated by gun manufacturers, the National Rifle Association and ALEC which encourage gun ownership and carrying concealed handguns clearly is not in the public interest. What's New in Michigan and US Politics

With Romney's nomination virtually sewed up attention turns to the the question of who he will select as his running mate. Several considerations may enter into his decision--shoring up his sagging support among the party's base; repairing the damage to his support by women voters due to the recent issues over contraceptives and abortion; seeking support from Latino voters; winning in swing states like Ohio and Florida; and appealing to independent and moderate voters. It will be impossible to find someone who satisfies all of these objectives. Here are the Intrade odds for the leading contenders:

Marco Rubio--25%--Young Conservative Latino Senator from swing-state Florida

Chris Christie--11%--Moderate New Jersey Governor

Bob McDonnell--10%--Young, Conservative Virginia Governor

Susana Martinez--9%--Young, Latina Governor of New Mexico;

Rob Portman--8%--Junior Senator from Ohio; US Trade Representative under Bush

Paul Ryan--8%--Wisconsin conservative; chairman of the House Budget Committee

Michigan's "stand your ground" law was passed by the Michigan legislature and signed by Governor Jennifer Granholm. It became effective October 1, 2006. Michigan's law is quite similar to the controversial Florida law which reportedly has resulted in an big increase in shootings and deaths in that state. These laws are being promoted and adopted in many states across the country by the National Rifle Association with help from the American Legislative Exchange Council, aka ALEC, a conservative organization devoted to limited government and individual liberty.
